Research Interests:
Dr. Hashsham’s expertise is in the area of environmental genomics, microbial detection, microbial ecology, and mathematical modeling. His research foci include development of DNA biochips for parallel detection of microorganisms important to drinking water and wastewater and development of a hand-held platform for genetic analysis, development of new tools to manage mixed microbial communities, and environmental biotechnology. He is also interested in microbial ecology related issues, e.g., relationship between community structure and function of anaerobic microbial communities, and modeling of molecular data. In addition, he also works in the area of bioremediation of chlorinated solvents and biological processes of contaminant treatment. Current projects include i) Development of a PCR-chip for water safety, ii) development of on-chip PCR platform using virulence and marker genes, iii) He is co-investigator in several centers including EPA-DHS Center for Advancing Microbial risk Assessment and the NIEHS Superfund Basic Research Center.
