Research Interests:
Research being conducted in my laboratory is in the general areas of immunopharmacology and immunotoxicology and encompasses a number of extramurally funded projects.  A major emphasis of all of the projects is the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms for impairment of signal transduction cascades and gene expression during lymphocyte activation by drugs and chemicals. One major research focus is to characterize the mechanism for immune modulation by cannabinoid compounds. This effort has led to the first characterization of cannabinoid receptors within the immune system. Current goals include elucidation of signal transduction events initiated through as well as independently of cannabinoid receptors, including the peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPARg), leading to aberrant cytokine gene expression by T lymphocytes.  A second major research focus is the characterization of the molecular mechanism responsible for altered B cell function produced by halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons, including dioxins and polychlorinated biphenols.  This research, which resulted in the first characterization of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AH) and aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator in B cells, has lead us to test the hypothesis that dioxin and dioxin-like compounds suppress antibody responses by impairing B cell differentiation in an AH receptor-dependent manner. A third area of research concerns studies aimed at characterizing the role of cytokines expression patterns in airway remodeling induced by chemical and protein respiratory allergens as well as by respiratory pathogens.

Selected Professional Activities:
Dr. Kaminski is the Director of the MSU Center for Integrative Toxicology a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology and an affiliate faculty member in the MSU National Food Safety and Toxicology Center.  Dr. Kaminski is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and is also on the editorial board for  Toxicological Sciences, International Immunopharmacology, and Nonlinearity in Biology-Toxicology-Medicine.  He has served on various scientific advisory committees including the National Academy of Sciences Committee to Review the Health Effects in Vietnam Veterans of Exposure to Herbicides, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Science Advisor Board for the Dioxin Reassessment Review, the Health Effects Task Group for NSF International, and the National Academy of Sciences Committee to review EPA’s Exposure and Human Health Reassessment of TCDD and Related Compounds.  Dr. Kaminski also presently serves on the Board of Trustees for the International Life Sciences Institute-Health and Environmental Sciences Institute.  Dr. Kaminski is presently the Treasurer and a member of Council for the Society of Toxicology.  Dr Kaminski also serves as a member of Council for the Society on Neuroimmune Pharmacology.  He is also a member of the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, the American Association of Immunologists and the International Cannabinoid Research Society.  Dr. Kaminski has served on a number of peer-review committees including as a regular member of NIH ALTX-4; the US Environmental Protection Agency Science Review Panel for Health Research and  the American Chemistry Council. He received a NRSA Postdoctoral Fellowship, 1987-1988. Dr. Kaminski is a faculty trainer for the NIEHS training grant.
