Research Interests:
Dr. Zacharewski works in the area of receptor mediated toxicology. In his laboratory, the primary focus is on mechanistic toxicology that involves elucidating how a chemical elicits its adverse effects. More specifically, he is interested in exploring how chemicals cause changes in gene expression that result in hormone-dependent cancers and compromised reproductive fitness. Research efforts are currently divided into the following two areas: endocrine disruption, to examine receptor-mediated endocrine disrupting activities of chemicals and natural products in humans and wildlife; and toxicogenomics, to assess the effects of developmental exposure to endocrine disruptors on fertility and reproductive tissue gene expression profiles using gene expression array technology developed as a result of the Human Genome Project.

Educational Background:
University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, B.S., Chemistry with Microbiology Emphasis, 1986
Texas A&M University, Ph.D., Toxicology, 1990

Selected Professional Activities:
Dr. Zacharewski holds memberships with the Canadian Network of Toxicology Centres, the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, the Society of Toxicology, the Society of Toxicology of Canada, and the U.S. EPA Microarray Consortium (EOAMAC). Dr. Zacharewski is a faculty trainer for the NIEHS training grant.
