The College of Veterinary Medicine’s Phi Zeta Research Day will be held on Friday, October 12, 2007. The activities include 29 oral presentations and 59 poster presentations by students and faculty. Dr. Scott Weese, from the Ontario Veterinary College, will give a keynote addresss “One Medicine; Emerging Infections Diseases and an Old Concept” at 3 p.m. in G-a50 Vet. Med. Center. The University of Michigan Center for Risk Science and Communication presents the 2007 Bernstein Symposium: Nanotechnology and Health: Evidence and Impact on October 25-26, 2007 at the Biomedical Science Research Building (BSRB) 109 Zina Pitcher, Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Center, under the leadership of Dr. Martin Philbert, has put together a program that will bring together leading scientists and policymakers to examine the emerging field of nanotechnology, its potential impact on human health, and the growing debate over whether and how to regulate nanotechnology products. A broad array of expert speakers will present including Christine Todd Whitman, former MI U.S. Rep. Joe Schwartz, Risk Perception law expert Dan Kaham, EPA administrator George Gray, NIOSH Nano Group member David Warheit, and NPR Science Reporter Richard Harris. For more information, go to

Positions

The Department of Chemistry at the University of North Texas seeks a candidate for a faculty position at the Associate or Full Professor level. The candidate must hold a Ph.D. in chemistry. Post-doctoral experience is preferred. The successful candidate is expected to establish a strong, nationally recognized research program that will attract major extramural funding in their respective area of expertise and will be allocated competitive start-up funds. The candidate should also have the ability to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in their field of specialization. The specific areas of research are open, but preference will be given to candidates having research interests that add to and complement the Department’s Forensic program. The National Cancer Institute is recruiting for a Supervisory Pharmacologist/Toxicologist/Chemist to manage and coordinate a contract program for the toxicological evaluation of selected new therapeutic agents. The Toxicology and Pharmacology Branch, Developmental Therapeutics Program, Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis of the National Cancer Institute is responsible for planning, directing and evaluating a collaborative, extramural, contract-supported program in anticancer drug and vaccine development to provide information on preclinical pharmacology and toxicology data used in formulating recommendations for doses, dose escalation schemes and treatment schedules for clinical trial. This Branch includes a staff of at least 8, all of which are professionals at the GS-13/14 level. Post-doctoral Fellows and other contract staff also are assigned to the Branch periodically to supplement current NCI staff. The incumbent also serves as the scientific director of the Laboratory of Human Toxicology and Pharmacology in the NCI’s Frederick Cancer Research Facility that is supported by the SAIC contract. The Branch Chief determines the overall requirements for pharmacological and toxicological studies of agents in the Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis’ drug discovery and development programs and closely coordinates the functions of the Branch with other related program components, including the Biological Resources Branch, Biological Testing Branch, Drug Synthesis and Chemistry Branch, Natural Products Branch, Pharmaceutical Resources Branch, Regulatory Affairs Branch (CTEP), the Investigational Drug Branch (CTEP) and various components of the CCR, especially the Molecular Targets Program.
