The MSU Graduate School is sponsoring a workshop by Dr. Barbara Lovitts on “Achieving Excellence: Insight into Faculty's Standards for Producing Outstanding Dissertations” on Monday, October 29, 2007 from 12:00-1:30 p.m. at the MSU KelloggCenter, Red Cedar Rooms A&B. Lovitts will discuss the practicalities of successful dissertation writing, based on her groundbreaking study of faculty expectations for writing dissertations. Making the Implicit Explicit is about communicating to doctoral students the tacit "rules" for the assessment of the dissertation. Lovitts provides the results of a study in which over 270 faculty from ten major disciplines (including faculty from MSU)-spanning the sciences, social sciences, and humanities-were asked to make explicit their implicit standards or criteria for evaluating dissertations. Come hear what faculty are really saying about what they expect, and how you can use this information to produce an outstanding dissertation.Registration is required. Parking passes and lunch are provided. Contact gradwrsp@msu.edu to register. Include your name, department, e-mail address and the name of the workshop (Achieving Excellence).
The following MSU Statistics workshop is accepting registrants: “Mixed Model Analysis of Research Data” on Friday, November 2, 2007. For detailed information and to register, go to http://www.cstat.msu.edu.
